Michael and Mary Meyers

Michael Meyers (Mike) – Born September 13, 1858 at Echternack, Luxembourg.  He died October 26, 1962 from pneumonia at age 68.  He was the second oldest son of Margaret (Margaretha Wengeler) and Peter Meyers (who died September 25, 1882).  They were called Pete and Maggie.  At age 10, Mike Meyers immigrated with his parents to Aurora, Illinois on April 1, 1868.  They resided at 4 Forest Avenue, Aurora, Illinois.  Mike Meyers also had a brother, Peter, and a sister, Elizabeth, who in later years was said to be his only living relative.  Her married name was Elizabeth Bury and her address was 2024 Harvey Avenue in Chicago.

On November 25, 1886, a Thanksgiving Day, Mike Meyers, at age 28, married 20-year-old Mary Ellen Tighe (Molly), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Tighe of Aurora, Illinois.  The ceremony was performed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, Fox and Root Streets, where Molly had been baptized, received first communion and was confirmed.  It has been noted that the two had 58.20 to their collective names.

Mary Ellen Tighe (Molly) (of Irish descent, born on August 15, 1866 at 272 Pierce Street, Pigeon Hall (Aurora), Illinois) died after an eleven-year illness from a paralytic stroke at their farm home at Lake Hook, Hutchinson, Minnesota, on Christmas Eve, 10:00 P.M., December 24, 1938 at age of 72.  During her lifetime she was a charter member or the Bear Lake Sunshine Society.  She was also a member of the School Board of District 14 at Lake Hook for six years.

Molly’s father was Pat Tighe (who died in 1891 in Ireland).  Her mother was Mary Laden of County Cork, Ireland.  She was one of nine children.  Her oldest brother John Tighe died in 1895 at age 46.  The next brother, Owen, died of paralysis before his father died; next in line was Hugh who was killed on the Burlington Railroad out of Chicago.  Another brother, Jim lived to age 60.  A sister, Elizabeth (Libby), died of gallstones in Chicago.  Other brothers and sister were William, Frank and Mary who died in their younger years.

For some 20 years Mike Meyers worked as a blacksmith in the old Burlington Railroad shop in Aurora.  It might be noted here that the Mike Meyers side of the family tended to be railroad people, while the Irish Tighes tended to be cops.

Mike Meyers himself was self-educated in his youth.  His studies were done at home with the aid of a simple dictionary that is still in the possession of the family.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter and had visited the Minnesota lake area.  He and his family settled on a 30-acre farm on Lake Hook in 1892 “in the midst of wilderness” as a newspaper account described it.  It was also related that there was “a Shetland pony as the only means of power at the time and it was used for clearing land, plowing and driving.”

Mike Meyers was often honored in his lifetime for good sportsmanship.  He was a charter member of the Gopher Campfire Club.  He was also an active deputy game warden for many years, as well as a school board member for rural school district 14.  The land for district 14’s one-room schoolhouse was purchased by the Meyers family.

Mike Meyers purchased 10 additional acres on May 10, 1903.  The farm was always referred to as “the 40 acres”.  At the time of Mike Meyers’ probate (circa 1926), the farm value was listed as $4,375.00.

The family belonged to St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Hutchinson.

Born to Mike and Molly Meyers were four Children:

Arthur August Meyers – (SEE SEPARATE SECTION – Page 3)

William Francis Meyers – (SEE SEPARATE SECTION – Page 5)

Albert James Meyers – Born on April 30, 1892 at Aurora, Illinois and died of Leukemia at age 72 on February 19, 1964 at the VA Hospital, Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Albert, affectionately known as Baldie, was known as a modest and shy bachelor.  He spent his entire life at the Lake Hook farm.

He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, third degree.  Albert went into the Army in World War I on July 25, 1918.  He was an avid fisherman and hunter.  In later years he ran the boat rental and concession stand at Lake Hook where there were usually 15 to 20 boats to look after and maintain.

On June 16, 1959, Albert purchased the District 14 school property (one acre), which was located next to the Meyers’ family farm, for $165.00.  Three days later he purchased the school building located on this property for $25.00.  (A little family scuttlebutt:  When Albert and Elizabeth were feuding, Albert moved from the farm into the schoolhouse for a short period.)

Elizabeth Meyers (Lizzy) – Born on June 15, 1908, at Hutchinson, Minnesota and died at age 77 on July 25, 1985 after a fall taken on June 12.  She graduated in the class of 1925 with honours from Hutchinson High School.  She had one early marriage to Francis O’Fallon of Hutchinson on September 20, 1928.  They weren’t divorced until January 26, 1944.  (Although it was said that Francis was very handsome, he also was a real “no-goodnik”.  He spent time in prison on a rape charge and Lizzy forever after tried to deny her marriage to him.  It was years before she divorced him, possibly because of her Catholic beliefs.)

She had several live-in relationships, mostly men who accompanied her on her “Carny” trips around the country.  She had a cookhouse (hamburger stand) that she took around to county and state fairs in the US and Canada.  Later she purchased and toted around the country to fairs a World War II Nazi Military display that included such items as Nazi uniforms, weapons, coins, and other paraphernalia.  The men in her life included Donald Curran, a policeman from Aurora, Illinois who was a friend to her all of her life, although they battled like hell (as only Lizzy could) all those years; Charlie Balfranz, C.E. (Bill) Coy and Mac Walsh who were her Carny cronies.

Other members of the family, nieces and nephews, traveled the Carny route at various times with Lizzy – Art Meyers putting in the most miles.

Another sister was born shortly after their move to Hutchinson, but she died in infancy.

Mike, Molly, Albert and Elizabeth Meyers as well as the baby are all buried at St. Anastasia Cemetery in Hutchinson.

Arthur A. Meyers in buried in Watertown, South Dakota.

Marion Meyers is buried at Resthaven Cemetery, Glendale, Arizona.

ARTHUR AUGUST MEYERS

Arthur August Meyers – Born August 25, 1888, at Aurora, Illinois and died October 11, 1934 at Watertown, South Dakota at age 46.  He is buried in the Veterans of Foreign Wars section at Watertown.  His death caused a conflicting controversy handed down over the years as to whether his death was caused from pneumonia or heart trouble; it was further related that he had never had a sick day in life until the day of his death.

On November 10, 1917, at Aberdeen, South Dakota, he married Marion R. Ashbaugh of Butler, South Dakota (born August 8, 1897 at Slayton, Minnesota to Samuel Theodore Ashbaugh and Emma Camilla Andersen).  She died March 7, 1965 in Phoenix, Arizona at age 68 of a malignant brain tumor.

Art Meyers entered the Army on May 15, 1918.  During World War I he served as a chauffeur.  He was stationed In the Iowa and Chicago area.  After the war he became a Pontiac-Oakland automobile dealer in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and later in Watertown, South Dakota.  He was a racing enthusiast.  He owned and raced both automobiles and boats during his lifetime.  Old-time (circa 1916) family photos show Arthur Meyers racing boats on Lake Michigan at record speeds.  He established a new world record on Lake Michigan with the first boat to go a mile a minute – 62 miles an hour.  He was also known to be a lifetime prankster (an affliction passed on to his oldest daughter, Dottie).  They had four children as well as two grand children:

Dorothy Mary Meyers – Born September 2, 1920 at Watertown, South Dakota.  Married (2nd waltz) March 13, 1950 at Osage, Iowa to Charles H. Bailly (born August 28, 1908 at Chicago, Illinois and died April 24, 1995).  They had no children.  Dorothy sold the restaurant that she and Charles opened in August 1964, called Bailly’s.  Address: 8503 W. Oraibi, Peoria, Arizona, 85382.

Arthur Dale Meyers – Born on November 29, 1922 at Watertown, South Dakota.  Known as Junior in his youth, Art attended school (grades 7 & 8) in the one room schoolhouse on the corner of the farm.  After his father passed away in 1934, Art moved to Lake Hook near Hutchinson, Minnesota where he lived and worked on Mike and Molly’s farm.  He also attended high school in Hutchinson.

After serving in the navy during World War II, Art met a lovely woman named Janet Dugaw (born September 2, 1921 at Forest Park, Illinois).  On November 9, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois, Arthur and Janet were married.  They stayed in Chicago until 1951 when they moved to Denver, Colorado.  It was there that their daughter was born.

In 1959 the family moved to Glendale, Arizona where they still reside today.  Although Art is fully retired from the automobile industry, both he and Jan have been involved in auto racing for many years.  They like most other sports.  Address: 7441 W. Denaro Drive, Glendale, Arizona, 85038.  Their daughter:

Nancy Lee – Born March 7, 1955 at Denver, Colorado.  Nancy is a teacher/trainer in the Phoenix Union High School District.  Address: 1640 West Clarendon, Phoenix, Arizona, 85315.

Delores Darlene Meyers – Born September 10, 1928 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  Married on October 12, 1951 at Minneapolis, Minnesota to Bruce Bauer Ritchey (born February 11, 1923 at Kansas City, Missouri and died September 8, 1980 at age 57).  Delores was called Peaches in her adolescent years.  She currently resides in Arizona.  She also maintains a home in Alamos, Sonora, Mexico.  Address:  2106 W. Marlette, Phoenix Arizona, 85015.  Delores and Bruce had one daughter:

Gail Teresa – Born November 14, 1959 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Married on June 21, 1980 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Phoenix, Arizona to Mark Lee Dreisbach (born June 22, 1952 in Detroit).  The two currently reside at 5850 Inkster Road W., West Bloomfield, Michigan, 48323.

Marilou Mildred Meyers – Born on February 24, at Bradley, South Dakota.  Mari is an author and recently published a Mexican food cookbook titled “Gourmet Gringo”.  Address:  1203 Avenida Hermosa, Phoenix, Arizona, 85014.

WILLIAM FRANCIS MEYERS

William Francis Meyers – Born July 31, 1890 In Aurora, Illinois and died April 15, 1969.  He was the only one of his family to immigrate to Canada.  In 1911 he settled in Spalding, Saskatchewan.  He was married to Martha Gertrude Herriges (born September 7, 1897 in Madison Wisconsin and died on December 18, 1985 at Watson Saskatchewan).  Martha immigrated to Canada on May 5, 1906 with her family and settled in Englefeld, Saskatchewan.

Bill and Martha were married on November 25, 1919 at Guardian Angels Church, St. Gregor, Saskatchewan, Canada and homesteaded near Spalding.  Their first home was a modest, one-story house consisting of a kitchen/living room combination and one bedroom.  It was in this house that four of their children were born.

The homestead was well wooded and had to be cleared by hand and cultivated by horsepower.  There were many hardships to endure.  The meager family income was augmented by selling eggs, cream and butter at the local store in exchange for needed staples.

In about 1929, Bill Meyers decided farming wasn’t to be his lifetime career so they sold the farm and moved to Muenster, Saskatchewan where Bill became a grain buyer.  In 1930 they moved to Romance, Saskatchewan where Bill spent 25 years buying grain for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool until his retirement in 1955.  It was in Romance that seven more children were born to Bill and Martha.

These were good years along with many problems and hard work.  The depression didn’t seem to bother the family too much because Bill had a regular income from the wheat pool.  The family also raised its own beef, pork, chickens, eggs, vegetables, bees for honey and homemade beer.  Bill also raised silver fox and sold the pelts to fur companies.  Always looking for the best that money could buy, Bill bought Jersey cows to proved the family with plenty of rich milk, cream, butter and cheese.  (The only downside, according to Dan Meyers, was manuring the barn and milking the darn cows.)

The offspring all attended Early Dawn School, 2 ½ miles east of Romance, and St. Oswald Church, 2 ½ miles south of Romance.  The church was later moved into Romance where it was located on land donated by Bill Meyers.  Social life for the family consisted of mainly of ball games and picnics in the summer.  The school picnic at the end of June was one of the highlights of the year.  Bill was an avid ball player, hunter and fisherman.  As a hunter, Bill could always scare up a deer in the bush and somehow be in the right spot to get a shot away.  In spite of a bad arm, Bill could maneuver well in a goose pit and get his share, if not more, of geese.  As for fishing, his first experience dated back to when he was a boy and fell through the ice while skating in Lake Hook, Minnesota, and came up with a minnow in his pocket.

In spite of his bad arm, a family of eleven energetic and active children, and a live-in mother-in-law for many years, Bill Meyers never lost his good sense of humour.  He was blessed with a wife who, for the most part, accepted things as they were.  The two had an undying love for their children and were proud as each one left the nest to make his, or her, own way in life.

Dan Meyers says he is sure there are many things that could be remembered and said about Bill Meyers that would be informative and interesting.  If his father were here today, he would probably be telling a fish story involving Gary Herriges and others who he many have met along his path of life.  Bill and Martha may also be shocked to realize that they have left behind a legacy of over 200 people; 11 children of their own, 50 grandchildren, over 100 great grandchildren and over 40 great great grandchildren.  They are:

MARY ARCELLA MEYERS

MARY ARCELLA MEYERS – Born October 26, 1920 at Spalding, Saskatchewan and died on May 23, 1969 at Watson Saskatchewan.  Arcella attended Early Dawn Elementary School and St. Ursula’s Academy.  Arcella was married on June 5, 1940 at St. Oswald Roman Catholic Church in LeRoy, Saskatchewan to Jack Joseph Zentner (born June 25, 1913 at Senate, Saskatchewan and died December 26, 1991 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan).

Some fond memories of Arcella include how special she made Christmas for the family at home, and the fact that she took the children to the lake for a week every summer with Martha Meyers.  Her favourite television shows were Tommy Hunter, Ed Sullivan and Bonanza.

None will love you more                                             And the name that I write

Than the one that writes tonight.                               Is dim on the page,

            Lovingly                                                                      And do not forget

DONALD NICHOLAS MEYERS

DONALD NICHOLAS MEYERS (DON) – Born on January 6, 1922 in the family home, 3 miles east of Spalding, Saskatchewan.  The local doctor traveled 20 miles (coming from the “big town” of Watson) in an open “cutter” sleigh with a team of ponies in –40° F weather to deliver Don. Apparently he was born almost totally tongue-tied.  Don recalls that around the time he was four years old there was a particular day that another family came to visit and all of the children were sent outside to play.  Young Donald attempted to tell the children of a new calf born that same morning and soon the race was on for the barn with Donald leading the way.  He never saw the single strand of barbed wire strung up for use as a horse compound and ran into it.  As he ran into it, the wire caught under his tongue and a barb tore his tongue all the way to the back of his throat.  Don says he hasn’t stopped talking since then…

Don continued living in Saskatchewan until World War II began and on May 5th, 1941 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a pilot.  After graduation, Donald trained as a coastal command pilot in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.  Donald then flew in war zones in England, French Morocco, Algeria, Gambia, Gibraltar, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Libya and Italy.  Don moved home to Canada on August 12, 1945.  Don was honored to receive a mention in Dispatches (a gold leaf pin) from the King of England.

Don then went to school in Vancouver, British Columbia, to learn to become a log scaler and grader.  He received a BC Scaler’s certificate and went on to work as a tree faller for several companies on the BC coast, he later moved inland to Williams Lake, British Columbia.  After several years he began flying again.  Don also met Elsa Elizabeth McHarg (Betty) (born September 14, 1929 at Watson, Saskatchewan).  On May 2, 1953 at Kelowna, British Columbia, don and Betty were married.  It seemed as though in no time at all, their own three children were grown and the grandchildren began to appear.  After retiring from flying, Don was employed by the Department of Fisheries for 20 years.  Fully retired now, Don and Betty still reside in BC.  Address:  Box 141, 7210 Fraser Crescent, Anglemont, British Columbia, V0E 1A0.  Along with their 3 children they also have 6 grandchildren:

MacMillan.  Before his 16th birthday, Roy moved on again, this time settling in Banff.  He landed a job driving a charter tour bus, which turned out to be his lifetime occupation.  On October 4, 1950 in Banff, Alberta, Roy married Marie Olson.  Together they have one daughter and one grandchild:

PATRICK JEROLD MEYERS – Born June 10, 1932 at Romance, Saskatchewan and died October 15, 2000.  Pat attended Early Dawn Elementary School and during school holidays he often worked on grain elevator construction and went grain buying with his father, Bill.  After finishing school, Pat worked for five years for the Canadian Pacific Railroad as a fireman, hand-shoveling coal on steam engines.  After a brief stint in the service station business and the oil patch he started a construction company and later added water well drilling to that business.

On March 15, 1957, Pat married Joyce Heather Colquhon (born May 31, 1941).  They divorced in December 1989.  Together they had four children and now ten grandchildren.  Their first three children all were given first names that started with the letter “B”, and Pat says he had every intention of continuing this trend with his fourth child, a daughter he wanted to call Billie.  However, Pat’s mother, Martha, was staying with pat and Joyce when their daughter was born and she had fallen in love with the name Tami.  Obviously, Martha won the decision.

And it was there that he met his future wife Joyce Arlene Pearl Curry (born February 20, 1939 on a homestead near Chelan, Saskatchewan).
